About the beer

In the 18th century, the Napoleonic Code stipulated that coachmen were forbidden from drinking beer with their passengers and, therefore, could not leave their coaches to quench their thirst during stops along the way. Pauwel Kwak, who was a well-known brewer in the Dendermonde area and also owned an inn between Mechelen and Ghent, invented an efficient solution to this problem. He offered his famous Kwak beer in a special glass that could be attached to the carriage, so that coachmen could also enjoy a beer. Since the 1980s, Pauwel Kwak has been produced by Brouwerij Bosteels, which also produces the popular Tripel Karmeliet and DeuS Brut des Flandres.
