About the beer

Chimay 150 has a beautiful golden colour and a compact, white head of foam. Despite its 10% ABV, it is remarkably well-balanced on the palate. It is a refreshing and fruity beer, and pleasantly surprising with aromas of mint, bergamot, lime, and eucalyptus. Delicate hints of rosemary and clove blend perfectly with subtle floral notes and an invigorating touch of ginger. The body is round, and the smoky and spicy palate, so characteristic of Chimay, provides a truly refined aftertaste. Two varieties of hops are used in its production – Saaz and Hallertau Mittelfrüh – as well as an undisclosed spice that gives it a unique flavour.

The history of Chimay began in 1850 when the priest of Virelles, Father Jean-Baptiste Jourdain, and the Prince of Chimay, Joseph de Riquet de Caraman, entrusted a mission to a small group of monks from Westvleteren: to take up residence on the Scourmont plateau with the goal, then as now, of “supporting the Chimay region”. To this end, they decided to brew beer using the abundant water available on the marshy plateau; the first batch was produced in 1862. Subsequently, they also began producing cheese, which is, incidentally, the perfect match for Chimay. The brewing knowledge has been passed down from generation to generation to ensure that the principles of Chimay are always respected. Today, it is one of the five Belgian breweries that can display the “Authentic Trappist Product” label. We highly recommend a visit to the Abbey of Notre-Dame de Scourmont.
