About the beer

A Czech Pale Lager style beer, golden in color, with a light hop aroma and a malty flavor. Its name comes from the Czech city where it is brewed, České Budějovice, and is translated into many languages as “Budweis,” which is why this beer is often confused with the American Budweiser. However, the only thing the two have in common is the name, which has been in dispute since the beginning of the 20th century.

The Budweiser Budvar brewery was founded in 1895 in České Budějovice “Budweis” under the name “Czech Joint-Stock Brewery.” Its first batch of beer was also brewed that year. The brewery followed the city's brewing tradition, which dated back to the 13th century. In the 16th century, this beer was highly appreciated at the court of King Ferdinand I of Habsburg, which is why it was dubbed “the beer of kings.” By the end of 1896, the brewery's total production reached 51,100 hectoliters. In 1930, the brewery registered the name Budvar for a new type of beer and the company name was changed to Budvar-Czech Joint-Stock Brewery České Budějovice. Currently, Budweiser Budvar exports its beers to almost 80 countries, making it one of the brands with the greatest reach in the Czech Republic.
