Achel Bruin 8 33 cl

ABV: 8.0% · Untappd: 3.7

Just as a dubbel should be! This dark brown Trappist beer presents aromas of dried fruit and a very pleasant mouthfeel – with surprising notes of caramel and coffee – and manages, at the same time, to be very refreshing. Once a Trappist beer produced by the Brouwerij der Sint-Benedictusabdij de Achelse Kluis, in 2023 the possibility of adopting the designation of Abbey beer is being studied. Either way, it is an excellent beer!

About the beer

Brother Antoine, former brewer at Rochefort Abbey, moved to the Trappist Achel Abbey in 1997 to help develop the "twin" beers Achel 8, Bruin and Blond. These two beers are the abbey's strongest and can be consumed outside the Abbey, unlike the Achel Blond 5, which can only be enjoyed within the abbey grounds. Achel Bruin, or Brune, is a top-fermented beer that undergoes bottle fermentation, and despite being a typical Trappist beer, it has high drinkability.

In 2021, Achel lost the right to use the "Authentic Trappist Product" label as the monks moved to Westmalle, and in 2023, the Abbey was sold to the Tormans Group. Consequently, none of the three essential criteria for this status are met anymore: monks overseeing beer production, production within the Abbey, and proceeds being channeled to social causes. Adopting the "Abbey Beer" designation is a possibility, yet to be confirmed.
