About the beer

Gouden Carolus: Premium on the inside and eccentric on the outside!
Gouden Carolus Classic originates from the rich tradition of Mechelen, paying homage to Emperor Charles V, who was born in Mechelen, where the Het Anker brewery has been based since 1471.

At that time, Mechelen was the capital of the Low Countries, with its own brewers' guild whose members had the honour of brewing and offering their finest beer to Emperor Charles V. The name “Gouden Carolus” is a reference to the gold coins engraved with the effigy of Emperor Charles V. This Grand Imperial Beer was even a regular drink during fox hunts.

Tasting Notes:
It presents a noble, ruby brown colour and a fine, beige, creamy head. The aroma features notes of nuts, cloves, chocolate, and vanilla, while on the palate, it has a sweet start with notes of plum, caramel, toffee, and brown sugar. There is also a deep character of dried fruits, spices reminiscent of Christmas, and a slight earthy bitterness. The finish is lingering, slightly acidic/balsamic, with toasted caramel and hints of hops.
