About the beer

Westmalle Tripel is a benchmark Belgian Trappist beer, considered the first 'tripel' in the world. First produced in 1934 to mark the opening of the new brewhouse at the Abbey of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart of Westmalle, its creation was based on a recipe by Henri Vanderlinden, master brewer of the nearby Witkap in Brasschaat and advisor to Westmalle. The term 'Tripel' refers to the use of a tripled amount of ingredients compared to the abbey's original recipes, resulting in a strong ale with a robust and complex character that has inspired countless breweries to adopt the style.

With an ABV of 9.5%, this beer stands out for its brilliant golden color and creamy head, presenting a rich and balanced aromatic profile. Fruity aromas, with notes of apple, banana, and a hint of citrus, are accompanied by nuances of spices and malt. On the palate, it reveals itself to be full-bodied and intense, with a perfect balance between malt sweetness and hop bitterness, culminating in a dry and elegant finish.

Like other Trappist beers, Westmalle Tripel is bottle-conditioned, which allows its aromas and flavors to evolve over time. For an ideal experience, the abbey monks recommend storing the bottles upright and pouring the beer carefully, leaving about 1 cm of liquid in the bottle to prevent the yeast from entering the glass. This yeast, rich in vitamin B, can be consumed separately, a common practice among the monks.

Produced according to the principles of the Purity Law and the motto "Ora et Labora," Westmalle Tripel is a true milestone in the history of Belgian Trappist beer. It pairs perfectly with fish dishes, seafood, or strong-flavored cheeses, enhancing its sensory richness and unique character.
