About the beer
PS – Did you know that Chimay Bleue was originally brewed in 1954 as a Christmas beer? With an incredible aging potential, it is fittingly called “Grand Reserve” in its 75 cl version.
The history of Chimay began in 1850 when the priest of Virelles, Father Jean-Baptiste Jourdain, and the Prince of Chimay, Joseph de Riquet de Caraman, entrusted a mission to a small group of monks from Westvleteren: to take up residence on the Scourmont plateau with the goal, then as now, of “supporting the Chimay region.” To this end, they decided to brew beer using the abundant water available on the marshy plateau; the first batch was produced in 1862. Subsequently, they also began producing cheese, which is, incidentally, the perfect match for Chimay. Brewing knowledge has been passed down from generation to generation to ensure that Chimay's principles are always respected. Today, it is one of the 5 Belgian breweries that can display the “Authentic Trappist Product” label. We highly recommend a visit to the Abbey of Notre-Dame de Scourmont.
