Achel 8 Blond is a Belgian Strong Ale; a Tripel, a top-fermented beer that undergoes bottle conditioning and which, unlike Achel 5, could be consumed outside the Abbey gates! Once a Trappist beer produced by the Brouwerij der Sint-Benedictusabdij de Achelse Kluis, as of 2023, the possibility of adopting the designation of Abbey beer is being studied. Either way, it is an excellent beer!

About the beer

Brother Antoine, a former brewer at the Abbey of Rochefort, moved to the Trappist Abbey of Achel in 1997 to assist in the development of the "twin" beers, Achel 8 Bruin and Blond. These two beers are the abbey's strongest and can be consumed outside the abbey, unlike the Achel Blond 5, which can only be enjoyed within its walls. The Achel Bruin (or Brune) is a top-fermented beer that undergoes bottle conditioning and, despite being a typical Trappist beer, has high drinkability.

In 2021, Achel lost the right to use the "Authentic Trappist Product" label as the monks relocated to Westmalle, and in 2023, the Abbey was sold to the Tormans Group. Consequently, none of the three essential criteria for this status are met: monks overseeing beer production, production within the Abbey, and proceeds being channeled to social work. Adopting the "Abbey Beer" designation is a possibility, yet to be confirmed.
