4 Steps to Pouring the Perfect Beer
Did you know that how a beer is poured can completely change your tasting experience?
A well-poured beer is a pleasure for the senses! And the art of pouring a beer is not exactly rocket science; you just need to follow a few simple guidelines but, as with everything, practice makes perfect! Discover, in just 4 steps, how to pour the perfect beer!
1st – Temperature: The Foundation for a Perfect Beer
We use a “rule of thumb” where the serving temperature is similar to the beer’s alcohol content. Higher-alcohol beers should be enjoyed at higher temperatures so that all the aromas and flavors can be identified, which might otherwise remain muted at lower temperatures. Beers with an alcohol content below 5% ABV should be served at 4ºC, and we apply the same temperature suggestion for ciders and non-alcoholic beers. Ultimately, also consider your personal taste, as the experience is unique and should be adapted to each individual.
2nd – Glassware: Enhances the characteristics of each style
The ideal approach is to have the glass appropriate for each beer style because, in most cases, they were designed with the specific characteristics of that style and particular beer in mind. Thus, the aromas and the head are enhanced, and even the ideal temperature is reached and/or maintained for longer.
If it is not possible to use the brand's glass, we choose the white wine glass, with a medium-high stem and a slightly tapered rim, as the serving glass for almost all beers.
- In most cases, the glass should be at room temperature or chilled, but never frozen.
- The glass must be perfectly clean, free of dust, residue, or marks. If it shows spots, reject it.
- Before pouring, you can rinse the glass with cold water and let it dry on an appropriate drying rack that allows air to circulate.
- If you choose to dry it with a cloth, use microfiber ones to avoid leaving any traces.
- The detergent must be neutral and oil-free.
The famous “bubbles” in beer are less dense than the liquid, which is why they float to the surface. When they get stuck to the side, it is a sign that the glass is not well-washed and carbon dioxide bubbles are trapped in the dirt. It needs to be washed again, whether at home or at the bar. Especially at the bar, a good way to improve the service is to be demanding about how the beer is stored and served.
At Syndicato, you will find Glasses, Chalices, and Flutes for the main beer styles.
3rd – Serving: The head is essential!
Pour the beer into the glass at an angle of approximately 30 degrees to encourage the head to grow. Pause every third of the bottle to let the foam solidify and gradually straighten the glass as you finish the pour.
The goal is to have a head of foam at least two fingers thick (3 to 4 cm). This is particularly important for Weizen and Belgian ales.
Check if there is yeast sediment at the bottom of the bottle and hold it back. Note, however, that some styles, particularly Weissbier, are traditionally served with the yeast sediment; “wake it up” by rotating, swirling, and turning the bottle.
4th – Cheers: Appreciate every detail
Admire the color of the beer, the life in the glass, and the head of foam, smell and feel the aromas, and… cheers! Appreciate it, enjoy it, and discover everything a beer has to offer!
Follow these steps and be better prepared to turn every beer into a memorable experience, because that is how it should be. Remember that good service is just as important as choosing the right beer.
